Summary: This case report arose as a consequence of surgical experience in our team where a 7mm stripper had to be used


During ACL reconstruction surgery, the loss of muscle tissue in the harvest of the hamstring graft will depend on the size of the Stripper used. The purpose of this work is to compare and quantify the loss of healthy muscle tissue when performing graft harvest. Therefore, 10 cadaverous preparations from our cadaveric lab were used in which the hamstrings tendons, semitendinosus and gracilis, were extracted in a comparative way using 5mm and 7mm strippers. The results obtained and discussion on the exposed problem are detailed. Our hypothesis was confirmed. We found differences in loss of muscle weight which vary from 33% up to 65% by simply using a Stripper with a larger diameter than required.
We strongly recommend the use of 5mm stripper to minimize donor-site morbidity with less muscle tissue resection.
