The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Cologne-Merheim Medical Center - University of Witten-Herdecke (Campus Cologne) is a Level 1 trauma center in Cologne, Germany. One of the main focuses is the treatment of sports-related injuries. The Department of Sports Traumatology is Center of Excellence of the German Knee Society and performs approximately 2000 arthroscopic surgeries annually. The Medical Center is partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation and provides the primary medical care of the German national teams of Judo and Taekwondo. The department has a strong history of clinical research productivity. Ongoing clinical and experimental research efforts are funded by the European Union and the German Research Foundation. Over the past years, the division has participated in multiple international multicenter trials and overseas multiple register studies including the German Trauma Registry of DGU.

Role of the fellow with respect to Clinical, Surgical, Research, and other opportunities: The fellow will have the opportunity to attend surgeries based on his/her main focus. Dependent on the duration of the fellowship he/she can participate in research projects and/or create new projects with appropriate mentorship.

Research projects, research facilities and resources, cadaver labs, publication opportunities, integration of the patient and public involvement, and the role of the fellow: The department runs multiple research projects related with knee/shoulder/ankle surgery, including multi-center-trials, biomechanical projects, clinical projects, and retrospective analyses. All applicants should feel free to write an email to the contact person to get more informations about current research projects. Aims are to involve the fellow in as much projects as possible and to provide mentorship to create new projects.
