The mission of the University of Washington Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is to provide a comprehensive training experience for the trainee in all manner of athletic injuries. By working along-side our excellent faculty, we expect that our fellow will get a wide-range of learning experiences in order to develop the knowledge and skills needed to practice in our sub-specialty field.

Role of the fellow with respect to Clinical, Surgical, Research, and other opportunities:
Types of Educational Opportunities:
Research projects, research facilities and resources, cadaver labs, publication opportunities, integration of the patient and public involvement, and the role of the fellow: The fellow will have access to the research infrastructure that is available within the greater UW Department of Orthopaedics. Specifically, the Computational, Robotics, and Experimental (CoRE) Laboratories and offices on the 10th floor of the BB Building on the University of Washington Medical Center Montlake campus. There are two distinct lab spaces: the Biomechanics Laboratory in BB1002 and the Orthopaedics Robotics Research Laboratory. The Biomechanics Laboratory houses a variety of still cameras, an 8-camera Vicon motion capture system, Kistler force platforms, emed plantar pressure measurement plate, pedar in-shoe pressure measurement system and other typical instrumentation for lower extremity biomechanics and sports medicine research. The Orthopaedics Robotics Research Laboratory utilizes a Rotopod R2000 to simulate movement in cadaveric specimens. The CoRE Laboratories have a fully equipped workshop that includes a 3D printer and other prototype fabrication tools. The Director of the CoRE Lab, Dr. Scott Telfer, is a frequent collaborator with our Sports Medicine faculty and he has extended this collaborative relationship to include future Fellows who are interested in working with him on research projects. Clinical Outcomes Our sports medicine division has been tracking patient outcomes using RedCap for the last 3 years via their web-based questionnaire system that allows us to send patient reported outcome measures to patients after they have been to our clinic for an injury. This large dataset is a valuable resource for the fellow interested in conducting a clinical research project during their fellowship. Currently there are 2 research assistants in our division of Sports Medicine who are involved in coordinating our clinical outcomes studies and maintaining our RedCap patient reported outcomes database for all patients who have been seen at our Sports Medicine Clinic for any injuries or surgery.
