The Linksfield knee clinic was formed approximately 30 years ago by Dr Ponky Firer. This fellowship is run at the Netcare Linksfield Clinic which a private clinic as well as at the state run Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital. The fellowship focuses on knee surgery from the young to the arthroplasty. There is exposure to orthopaedic Sports medicine too.

Recent activity of Teaching Center: We have trained approximately 15 fellows over last 10 years. COVID has slowed the teaching but we are ready to move back into full gear. Prof Firer and Dr Gelbart have published in JISAKOS.

Estimate of Living Expenses (Housing and other major costs): Housing and scholarships may be available. Living expenses are approximately US$2000 per month. we apply for scholarships on application of the fellow according to their needs

Role of the fellow with respect to Clinical, Surgical, Research, and other opportunities: the fellow will be involved in clerking patients, assisting and performing some surgical procedures (dependant on insurance cover), research and teaching of registrars/residents
Types of Educational Opportunities:
Research projects, research facilities and resources, cadaver labs, publication opportunities, integration of the patient and public involvement, and the role of the fellow: The fellow will work together with the consultants during consultations, surgery and ward rounds. The fellow be responsible, insurance allowing, for running the day to day activities of the Charlotte Maxeke soft tissue knee unit. The fellow will be required to design a study and publish 1 article during their time and present at a local and international conference. we have existing online databases for which can be accessed for research data.
Related Conference/Lecture Schedule: The fellow will attend fortnightly m+m meetings, monthly journal clubs and daily ward rounds. S/he will also be given the opportunity to visit other centres of excellence around South Africa. we will arrange time in the University of Witwatersrand surgical skills lab and tailor course to the requirements of the fellow. these range from basic to advanced skills
