Summary: Mechanical versus Functional Alignment prospective study in Robotic TKA

Aims - The objective of this study is to determine the optimal alignment technique in TKA by comparing patient satisfaction, functional outcomes and complications in MA TKA versus FA TKA. Robotic technology was used to execute the planned implant positioning and limb alignment with high-levels of accuracy in all study patients. To compare the total KSS score (New Knee Society score) in Functionally Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty (FA-TKA) and Mechanically Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty (MA-TKA) pre-operatively and 18 months after surgery.

Material And Methods

- This study is a prospective, single-centre, randomised study. The study included 40 patients randomly allocated to either MA TKA (the control group) or FA TKA (the investigation group). All patients underwent robotic arm-assisted TKA to improve the accuracy of achieving the planned implant positioning and limb alignment

Results

and conclusion - The Robotic arm assisted functionally aligned total knee arthroplasty has better clinical and comparable radiological outcomes with Mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty at 18 months after surgery. Long term follow up is required to assess the implant survivorship and patient satisfaction in these group of patients.
