Abstract
Background
Symptoms of bilateral femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) are a common finding in the young adult population. Previous studies have demonstrated good short-term outcomes of simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopy for the treatment of FAI. The purpose of this study was to determine the outcomes of simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopy for the treatment of FAI at a minimum five-year follow-up.
Methods
A prospective database was used to collect clinical data, including reoperation rate, complications, and return to play time on patients with FAI who underwent simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopy performed by the senior author between August 2012 and April 2017. The primary outcome measures were the International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT)-12 score and the Non-Arthritic Hip Score (NAHS) at follow-up. Patients with minimum follow-up less than 5 years were excluded.
Results
In total, 47 patients (94 hips) were included with a mean age of 37.1 years (range, 21-59 years) at the time of surgery. Males accounted for 16 of the 47 patients (34%). iHOT-12 scores improved from 44.6 ± 20.0 preoperatively to 88.0 ± 14.1 at latest follow-up (p < 0.0001). NAHS scores improved from 65.4 ± 18.8 preoperatively to 92.8 ± 6.2 at latest follow-up (p = 0.001). No complications were reported within the series.
Conclusion
Simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopy for the treatment of FAI represents a safe treatment option producing effective mid-term outcomes in appropriately selected patients.
