Abstract:

12 high level or professional athletes were treated surgically for rectus femoris tendon avulsion tears from lower anterior iliac spine. They all were men. The mean age of them was 22,5 years (19 to 25 years). There were 10 professional soccer players and two international level sprinting / hurdling athletes. The time for surgery was appr. three weeks after the initial injury (10 days to 6 weeks). These were complete tears. In four of them the injury was recurrent, each partial new injury being worse than before. They were treated at first conservatively, but later operation was done after 4 to 9 months from the first injury. In all patients MRI examination was used. In three of them ectopic calcification developed at the site on avulsion tear. These bone masses were removed in surgery. The refixation of the rectus tendon was done with Mitek´s superanchor, usually two achors were used. The end result was good in 9 patients and moderate in 3 patients. Preoperatively the situation in all patients was poor. The rehabilitation to the preinjury level took from 3 to 6 months.
