My interest in a society such as ISAKOS was an early one. As a charter member of IAA and an
early member of ISK, I was pleased when the two societies developed a combined IAA/ISK format for biennial Congresses in Sydney (1987), Rome (1989), Toronto (1991), Copenhagen (1993) and Hong Kong (1995). I served as a Program Chair in 1989 and 1991 and joined the Board of ISK in 1991.
At the 1993 Copenhagen Congress, the mutual benefits of a combined single society became obvious to the boards of IAA and ISK. Preparations were made for a confirmation vote
by the membership of each society:
a mail vote by ISK prior to the 1995 meeting and a head count vote by IAA in Hong Kong. In each situation the vote was almost unanimous.

A board was elected in Hong Kong with the upcoming presidents of each society assuming leadership roles: President Peter Fowler and President elect Gary Poehling. There was no Executive Director. We received guidance and secretarial support from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Chicago.
Choosing a name, logo and journal as well as developing a constitution for our new society were essential early accomplishments of this hard working board. Ken DeHaven, David Dandy, Gary Poehling, Roli Jacob, and Barry Tietjens amongst others were key to these endeavours.
Rodolfo Carpignano, Chair of the 1997 Buenos Aires organizing committee, was a helpful member. Using specific input from our Board,
Rodolfo’s daughter, a commercial artist, designed our ISAKOS logo.
Following a successful site visit
to Buenos Aires prior to our initial Congress, I felt confident we were due for a pleasurable and successful experience. However, the quality of the First ISAKOS Congress exceeded all my expectations in every way. The site organization was great, as was the social program. Terry Whipple, Program Chair, put together excellent scientific sessions.
At that time, one had the feeling that a vision for the future of ISAKOS was articulated, and has since become the large, multifaceted, worldwide society we know today.
