A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.
–Mahatma Gandhi
This is especially true of ISAKOS. ISAKOS was formed by the merger of the International Arthroscopy Association (IAA) and the International Society of the Knee (ISK) in 1995 at the IAA & ISK Combined Congress in Hong Kong. As we celebrate our 20th Anniversary, we hope you enjoy this brief glimpse into the rich history of our organization.
Passion and enthusiasm have defined ISAKOS and our leadership. These great individuals have helped to shape a society that is known around the world for education, dissemination of science, fraternity, inclusion, and collaboration. Our volunteer leadership has devoted countless hours to continuously improve ISAKOS and by effect, patient care around the world. It is through their dedication that our educational efforts have been able to expand beyond our ISAKOS Congress, to now include publications of textbooks and booklets, educational collaborative courses, online education, international fellowships, and countless other projects.
My experience with ISAKOS began in 1997 at the ISAKOS Congress in Buenos Aires, as
a consultant for hands-on workshops, and continued in Washington, D.C., with surgical demonstrations in 1999. Since becoming the Executive Director in 1999, it has been my distinct pleasure to watch ISAKOS grow and mature over these last twenty years. During that time, our membership has nearly quadrupled to more than 4,000 members, with members from 94 countries.
Through our educational initiatives, ISAKOS continues to make a difference. It has been my privilege to witness the impact of the ongoing orthopaedic educational efforts of our dedicated membership. Gandhi was right. A small body of determined spirits can make a difference!
Every great organization has to have a team that can help turn its mission and goals into reality. The ISAKOS Staff believes in the mission set forth by its members and works tirelessly to accomplish the goals and initiatives set out by our dedicated committee members. The staff members share your passion and enthusiasm for arthroscopy, knee surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine education and appreciate the opportunity to bring your vision to life in the form of the various projects, courses and events held around the world.
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a diverse and fantastic organization, and would like to be the first to congratulate ISAKOS on its 20th Anniversary!
Wishing you many, many more successful years to come,
Michele Johnson
