Summary

Scapulohumeral periarthritis is extensive inflammatory response around shoulder articular capsule and soft tissue

Abstract

Purpose

To observe the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy and manipulation in treatment of patients with scapulohumeral periarthritis.

Methods

82 patients with Scapulohumeral periarthritis were randomly divided into two group: a treatment group(42 cases) and a control group(40 cases). All the patients in treatment group were treated with extracorporeal shock wave by DolorClastR apparatus at surface projection of shoulder byultrasound. Intensity is 0.12~0.16mJ/mm2. Every point treated 1000~2000 times for 3~5 course per 3 days. Meanwhile, patients of treatment group were treated by manipulation which loose in every directions for 60~90 seconds. patients in control group were manipulation only. Scored with VAS and Constant-Murley pre and post treatment.

Results

It was shown that the VAS of all the patients were lower than pretreat. The shoulder range of motion and Constant-Murley score were better than pre-treatment, which was significant different(P<0.05).

Conclusion

Extracorporeal shock wave could markedly relieve pain symptom. It also could improve symptoms shoulder ROM. It is a safe and effective method to deal with Scapulohumeral periarthritis.
