Total Knee Arthroplasty In Patients With Fused Knee, Outcome And Follow Up

Summary

ankylosed knee is a troubling condition that patients have some problems with it due to inability to bend their knee, we change their knee fusion to total knee arthroplasty which improve their function, abilities and their satisfaction.

Abstract

Background

Ankylosed knee have some serious problem for patients due to limited ROM and latter complications.there are many studies for change to ankylosed knee to total knee arthroplasty which their result are different.

Purpose

we change the bony fused and ankylosed knee in one stage with tibial tubercle osteotomy. with some tricks they can achieve more than 90 degrees of flexion in short time after surgery.

Method

10 patients with bony fused knee in full extension without patellar fusion mean age of 48 years old operated for change fused knee to primary prosthesis total knee arthroplasty with stem. tibial tubercle osteotomized for access to knee.
we achieve the 85 to 95 degrees of flexion after surgery and after a period of two months of rehabilitation, and they reach to a stable time of function, assess their knee with insall score.

Result:
patient satisfaction about their knee flexion was good to excellent. no extension lag were seen in these patients, maximum flexion was achieved is 110 (mean = 100).the goal of this procedure is to achieve a stable knee with maximum flexion. and minimum of pain. according to Insall score all of these patient are categorized in good result.

Conclusion

it is recommended that this surgery with some tricks may have good results for these patient who can bend their knees and prevent any other complications.
