Abstract

Objective

To report the Long term resultsof Arthroscopic surgery to treat sinus tarsi syndrome. Methods From July 2006 to May 2008,15 cases(6 male,9 female) of sinus tarsi syndrome were treated.Their ages ranged from 23 to 63 years(average,46.3).All cases had one side involvement.Left side was found in 10 cases, right side in the other 5 cases. All surgery were performed under tourniquet control and the patients were placed at the lateral decubitus position. The lateral, anterolateral, posterolateral portals were applied intraoperatively and the medial portal was added when necessary.VAS pain scale and AOFAS ankle-hindfoot scores were used for follow-up evalution. Results More than two lesions were found under arthroscopic visuallization in all cases. The lesions included:scar tissue hypertrophy and inflammation in the sinus tarsal canal, soft tissue impingement in the subtalar joint, synovitis, partial teras of subtalar capsule?ITCL or CL,cartilage injury, and subtalar degeneration. All cases were followed-up for 5 o 9 years(mean,7.5).The VAS pain scale was improved from 7.6(range,6~9) preoperatively to 2.5(range,1~4) at the last visit(P<0.01),and the AOFAS score was improved from 41.9(range,20~67) preoperatively to 83.1(range,70~100) at the last visit(P<0.01). 73.3% of cases achieved excellent and good results at the last follow-up according to AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score evaluation. Conclusion Arthroscopic surgery to treat sinus tarsi syndrome should be performed as soon as the conservative treatment fails and the clinical result is reasonably satisfactory.
