Summary: The results of healthy subjects and athletes will be used in the rehabilitation of patients after shoulder injuries. The results of biomechanical diagnosis of patients will be compared with the results of healthy individuals. Thus, we find out what level of improvement is the rehabilitation of the patient and how much still needed to be found at the level of healthy people.

Abstract:

Introduction. Current practise focuses strongly on symmetrical training even in disciplines non-symmetrical by definition (i.e. volleyball, handball, tennis, javelin throw, etc.). Regular measurements of strength of muscles rotating the shoulder will allow assessment of the extent of the disproportion. Knowledge of the training process and current health condition of the players is becoming a duty not only for the trainers but also for the players themselves. Nowadays, when winning or losing is often a question of few points difference, the highest possible fitness level of the players becomes a priority. The aim of this study was the evaluation of maximum strength of muscles rotating the shoulder in volleyball players and healthy persons in abduction angle of the arm. Materials. In order to assess strength of muscles rotating the shoulder a study was conducted with 50 students of the Józef Pilsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw enrolled into the study. 20 of these students had been playing volleyball in the past (some of them were still playing at that time) on the level of 2nd or 3rd league. The control group (30 healthy persons) had a higher than average fitness level. Methods. The measurements were conducted on a prototype device System SRR1-ZK, built to measure muscle strength in shoulder internal and external rotation a static state in abduction angle of the arm. In order to compare the data obtained in different positions the ANOVA test was used. When statistically significant differences were noted the level of significance was assessed using the Duncan test. The level of significance was set to p<0.05. Results. In most of the charts the results were higher in the study group. Only two measurements were statistically different – internal rotation, 90°, right limb (attacking) and the external rotation, 0°, left limb (p<0.05). These are the two of four most important results. The remaining results were statistically insignificant. Conclusions. The volleyball players obtain significantly higher results in measurements of strength of muscles rotating the shoulder. In the most suitable positions for measurements the internally rotating muscles presented significantly higher strength when compared to external rotators. The results of healthy subjects and athletes will be used in the rehabilitation of patients after shoulder injuries. The results of biomechanical diagnosis of patients will be compared with the results of healthy individuals. Thus, we find out what level of improvement is the rehabilitation of the patient and how much still needed to be found at the level of healthy people.
