PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE
Dr. John Joyce organized the first arthroscopy meeting in 1973 in Philadelphia. I was fortunate to be able to participate. I brought back
an arthroscope from Dr. Watanabe in 1972 when I returned from my military duty in Japan. At the time, I was a first year orthopaedic resident and
the youngest person at the meeting. Dr. Leonard Goldner, Chairman at Duke, provided all the resources to develop arthroscopy at Duke. Dr. Ward Cassels took me under his wing. Lanny Johnson, Dick O’Connor, Bob Jackson, Bob Metcalf, and
Jack McGinty were early mentors. Terry Whipple and Tassos Georgoulis were a constant stimulus and close compatriots. Later David Dandy and Pete Fowler were mentors.
In 1989, I was appointed treasurer of the IAA in Rome. We went into the

meeting in Toronto with only $1,000 in the bank. About five months prior to the meeting in 1991, the war in the Middle East broke out. Thankfully for everyone it was short lived and the meeting led by Bob Jackson was a great success.
The next meeting was combined with ISK in Copenhagen. Dr. David Dandy led negotiations to start combining the organizations. It was decided at that meeting that no new presidential line members would be elected as Peter Fowler was vice president of ISK and I was vice president of IAA.
It was decided that Peter would be the first president of ISAKOS and that I would follow. The first meeting was in 1997 in Buenos Aires. We had many challenges orchestrating the Congress. With the assistance of Kathryn Grady, at the AAOS, we
were able to successfully execute the meeting. Peter’s meeting was the birth of ISAKOS – the principles of inclusiveness with a focus on education were initiated.
The second meeting in
Washington, DC opened with dinner in the Library of Congress. It was a magical evening with a full moon to greet us over the capitol. It ended with a dinner in the press club.
The program run by John Bergfeld was robust with a focus on diverse participation.
