President, 2011–2013
PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE
In 1989, during the International
Knee Society Congress in Rome,
I participated in the first combined program between the IAA (International Arthroscopy Association) and ISK (International Knee Society), where the merger of the two societies was first discussed. During the combined Congress in Hong Kong,
I was excited to meet to some
very famous figures in the fields of arthroscopy and knee surgery, whose works and publications I had recently studied.
At the time of the merger of ISK
and IAA in 1995, with some friends from Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Spain, I actively participated in the creation of the Latin America Society of Arthroscopy, Knee and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (SLARD), founded during the first ISAKOS Congress, following the ISAKOS model and with the support of my friends in ISAKOS. My interest was to make SLARD stronger in the international community. SLARD and ISAKOS remain strong partners today!
2011
My first invitation to participate in the ISAKOS organization came in 1997 from Gary Poehling, who invited me to work in the Membership Committee. I dedicated myself to increasing the membership numbers, with special attention in South America. I continued to work on
the Membership Committee during Roland Jakob’s presidency and
from 2001 to 2003, I was the Chair.
I had the opportunity to increase membership, primarily in Latin America and Asia-Pacific regions, as these were the focus of the ISAKOS Board of Directors.
Each position on the ISAKOS
Board was both a challenge and a learning experience for me. I served as ISAKOS Executive Committee Secretary for two years, before being appointed as ISAKOS Second Vice President in 2007.
Perhaps the most challenging
and rewarding moment during my experience with ISAKOS came in 2011, when I served as local host for the 8th Biennial ISAKOS Congress
in Rio de Janeiro. I had the honor to collaborate closely with the ISAKOS Office on a truly successful ISAKOS Congress.
During my presidency from 2011
to 2013, I was able to reinforce my relationships worldwide and feel, once again, how important ISAKOS
is to the international community. The office, led by Michele Johnson and supported by Donna, Katie, Elizabeth, and Hilary gave important support.
Since ISAKOS’ founding, I have been proud to serve the Society and make many friends worldwide. During Per Renström, John Bergfeld, Paolo Aglietti and Freddie Fu presidencies, it was a dream to work with such important and respected people.
As a Past President, I am working with the same dedication and passion I felt on my first day with ISAKOS. ISAKOS will be always in our hearts.
GO ISAKOS!
