PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE
I first attended the combined IAA/
ISK Congress in Sydney in 1987 and subsequently became a member
of the International Arthroscopy Association. I was elected to the Board of Directors of IAA prior to the merger that created ISAKOS, and in 1995, at the Hong Kong Congress, joined the inaugural ISAKOS Board
of Directors. Subsequently, I served as Chairman of the Membership Committee and then joined the ISAKOS Presidential line in 1999. Ken DeHaven and Peter Fowler were great mentors in those early days.
The Executive Committee worked
very effectively under the outstanding leadership of Gary Poehling and
Roli Jakob, and the Presidential line including the immediate Past President provided very strong governance throughout my involvement with the ISAKOS leadership.
After the very successful 2001 Congress in Montreux, we agreed that the biggest priority for our young Society was to establish some financial security. A 5-year Business Plan was developed and,

Past President
after discussion with industry leaders, we decided to engage professional support to embark on an ambitious fundraising project. Freddie Fu was an outstanding Co-Chair of this
initial ISAKOS Global Connection Campaign. The most rewarding moment of my Presidency was reaching our target of $3 million before the Campaign was officially launched at the 2003 Congress in Auckland.
During my presidential term, ISAKOS renewed our partnership with our official journal, Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery. This partnership provided valuable benefits to our members, and valuable funding to support the ISAKOS Office.
One of my personal goals during my presidency was to increase ISAKOS Membership growth, with particular emphasis on developing countries and smaller countries like my own. It was gratifying to witness the growth in Membership in South America
and Asia-Pacific in balance with our established strength in North America and Europe.
With more secure funding following the Global Connection Campaign, ISAKOS was able to expand Committee projects and ISAKOS Educational Programs in collaboration with our Partner Societies to increase ISAKOS activities between the Biennial Congresses.
During my Presidency it was a great privilege to work with so many members from all over the world who actively supported our Society. Most especially, I thank Michele Johnson our Executive Director, who, worked tirelessly to ensure the success of our Society. I also derived enormous strength from the support of my dear friend Per Renström who has been alongside me throughout my entire journey with ISAKOS.
