Prof. Seil is a native Luxemburger. He studied medicine in Luxembourg and Brussels and trained in Belgium and Germany (Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Saarland Medical School, Homburg/Saar-Germany). He received his diploma of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1998 and of Special Orthopaedic Surgery in 2001 by the Medical Association of Saarland / Germany. He wrote his doctoral thesis on meniscal repair in 2001 and his professoral thesis (habilitation) on anterior cruciate ligament injuries in children in 2003. Prof. Seil works as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg since September 2004. His current appointment is director of the division of neurosciences and musculoskeletal diseases. His main areas of clinical activity are orthopaedic sports medicine as well as primary and revision knee reconstructive surgery. His scientific work deals with the analysis and improvement of diagnostic, surgical and non-surgical principles of overuse and sports-related joint injuries and diseases as well as on the investigation and promotion of primary and secondary prevention initiatives in sports medicine and joint surgery. He was appointed extraordinary professor in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Saarland in 2007. Prof. Seil is co-director of the Luxembourg Olympic Medical Centre since 2008 and of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory of the Luxembourg Institute of Health since 2009. Prof. Seil is fellow of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine since 2001 and member of many national and international medical professional societies. He is past president of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and of the German-speaking Society in Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Sports Medicine (GOTS). From 2003 until 2005, he was chairman of the arthroscopy committee of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). In 2014 he was president of the Annual Meeting of the French Arthroscopy Society (SFA) in Luxembourg and in 2016 of the GOTS in Munich. Prof. Seil is editorial board member and reviewer of several scientific journals in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. He authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as several books.
