Abstract

Objectives Observation of preliminary clinical result of extraarticularly endoscopic treatment with refractory tennis elbow. Methods A consecutive group of 22 patients of refractory tennis elbow who were treated by extraarticularly endoscopic technique in our institution between 2012 March to 2014 November. A retrospective analysis (8 males, 14 females; aged 44 years averagely) was undertaken to evaluate the outcome of endoscopic treatment. The patients received an average of 19 months ( 4~ 60months) of conservative treatment before surgery. The Mayo scores, DASH scores , VAS scores, duration of return to work or sports and satisfaction were used to evaluate the clinical results. Nonparametric test or Fisher’s Exact test was employed to analyze the relation of curative effect to the factors including sex, age, the interval between the onset of symptoms and the operation, the number of injections of corticosteroid, suturing or drilling technique was used in operation. Results The minimum follow-up period was 12 months ( average 21.9 months) , covered 100% of the patients. The curative effect in 85.4% of the patients was excellent or good, including 7 excellent ( 31.9%) and 12 good ( 54.5%) , 3 were fair (13.6% ). There was no statistical significance between the outcome and the gender, age, time from onset of symptoms to the operation, and the number of injection of corticosteroid. Adversely, statistically significant differences were found between the outcome and suturing or drilling in operation (P<0.05). Conclusions Extra-articularly endoscopic treatment with refractory tennis elbow is an effective method of surgical option. It is rather simple and safer than intra-articular operation. Suturing and drilling during operation will benefit the result of endoscopic treatment.
