The tourism capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, is famous for its breathtaking landscape, laidback beach culture
and the annual carnival. Located in the Southeast region of Brazil, with six million inhabitants, this Marvelous
City covers 1,224 square kilometers, with a coastline 246 kilometers long, and hosts 325 square meters of
green areas. Nestling between steep slopes and the sea, the creative spirit of Rio inspires and appeals to all
tastes.
The guiding spirit of this Marvelous City is the light-hearted carioca way of life that turns every inch of the city
into a accumulation of attractions: beaches, mountains, forests, open air sports and world-class events such
as New Year’s Eve, Carnival and many others. Packed with historical and cultural treasures, Rio is vibrant by
day and dazzling by night.
Its many flavors and colors offer something for every taste, every age. Like its best known symbol, Christ the
Redeemer, Rio welcomes its guests with open arms. Rio de Janeiro will host many of the 2014 FIFA World
Cup games, including the final, and the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, becoming the first South
American city to host the Olympics.
Weather
Rio’s summers, from December to March, are hot and humid with temperatures rising above 105°F (40°C)
routinely. In the spring and fall, the temperatures stay between the high 70s and low 90s (high 20s to low
30s Celsius). In the winter, June to Aug, it can cool off at night to as low as 59°F (15°C), but during the day
temperatures range from the 70s to the mid-80s (20s Celsius). Most rain tends to fall in the summer in short
intense tropical showers, or in the winter in longer drizzly showers.
Time Zone
Rio de Janeiro is 3 hours behind GMT. During daylight savings, Rio’s time difference changes to 2 hours
behind GMT.
Electricity
The electricity in Rio de Janeiro is 110 or 120 volts, although many hotels and buildings are fitted with
alternative power outlets with 220 volts.
Communications
Endowed with an excellent communications system linking it to the rest of Brazil and the world, Rio offers
direct dialing and collect call facilities from any telephone. Call-boxes are scattered all over town, even along
its beaches, with calling cards easily available. Mobile telephones may be rented at low fees by visitors. The
direct dialing code for Brazil is 55, and 21 for Rio de Janeiro.
